Not deterred by the heavy downpour on the morning of 8 January 2010 the Serunai team, represented by Ismail Hamzah and Shen J Kassim was warmly greeted by the care taker, Puan Sharifah or fondly known as Mak Pah. The team brought along with them a varied range of goodies comprising of delectable chocolates and cookies, jams and seasonal delicacies as a treat.
The shelter home (located near Titiwangsa Lake in Kuala Lumpur) houses 120 occupants comprising of abandoned children, orphans, single-mothers, OKUs (Orang Kurang Upaya - the Physically and Mentally Challenged Persons), senior citizens and children rescued from the streets of KL; some as young as 6 months old.
RTK has been self-funding for 12 years to date through the sale of home-made cookies, patchwork and recycled clothing that are carefully washed, pressed and individually wrapped in laundry bags. It has no patrons to champion its cause thus explaining the near-delipitated state of the Home although the place is kept clean and functioning with the help of a few dedicated volunteers from neighbouring universities.
They now face eviction as the house boarding 60 odd girls and single-mothers is to be returned to the landlord come April. For the first time RTK is appealing for public donation to raise enough funds to acquire a property nearby so that these children remain in their schools and close to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital where they frequent regular medical checks and blood tests.
